Block Printing Sketch Book Designs

Students learned the techniques of block printmaking. Each child made an abstract line design. Then they carved this design into a printing block that they printed for the cover of their book. The students also learned simple bookmaking techniques, which they used to assemble their sketchbook. *This is a variation of a lesson adapted from fellow art teacher Ray Henry

Wolf Kahn Landscapes

Fifth grade students studied the artwork of Wolf Kahn. Then using his work as inspiration they created the background of their landscape compositions using tissue paper and glue water. Each student chose a time of day or season to depict through his or her choice of colors.

In the foreground students drew trees using oil pastels. This was a favorite medium of Wolf Kahn’s. In their trees they also chose colors, which further portrayed the season or time of day they wished to show.
